Wang Tongshang is an associate professor in the School of Literature at Wuhan University. He is a
recipient of the 14th "Outstanding Teaching Contribution President Award" at Wuhan University and
primarily conducts research in the fields of Chinese historical linguistics and typology. He received his
undergraduate degree from Henan Normal University, and from 2003 to 2009, he pursued his master's
and doctoral degrees at Wuhan University. From 2007 to 2008, he received funding from the China
Scholarship Council to study as a joint doctoral student at the Chinese Department of the National
University of Singapore, and from 2017 to 2018, he was funded by the National Young Core Teacher
Project to conduct a visiting study at the National University of Singapore.
He has independently or collaboratively published 9 papers in academic journals, led 1 project supported
by the National Social Science Fund for Later-stage Funding, and led 5 research and teaching reform
projects at Wuhan University. In 2017, he was invited to be a keynote speaker for the "Deciphering
Chinese Characters" program on Hubei TV, where he taught about Chinese characters and culture. In
2019, he was invited to serve as a judge for the fourth season of "The Wonderful Chinese Characters"
program on Hubei TV.
Since his appointment as a teacher in 2009, he has guided students in creating antique postcards,
composing original couplets, and sculpting ancient characters. These innovative teaching activities have
been widely reported by many media outlets, including Chu Tian Metropolitan Daily, Xinhua News
Agency, and Guangming Daily. In the fourth issue of "Jingchu Couplet" in 2017, a special column was
opened to publish original couplet works created by undergraduate students at Wuhan University. Due
to his outstanding teaching performance, he has received many honors and awards, including the
Undergraduate Teaching Performance Award.
