The demand for green construction materials is spurred by increased regulations to reduce carbon footprint, limit greenhouse gas emissions, and other environmental problems. The exploitation of natural resources is growing rapidly to reduce energy consumption and minimize the impact on the environment.
Natural fiber with lightweight, high strength, renewability, biodegradability, and environmentally friendly has attracted significant attention. The sustainability of natural fiber-reinforced composites has led to upsurge its applications in engineering.
a) Multiscale structure and mechanics of natural plant
b) Combustion kinetics of natural plant
The development of green concrete using plastic waste is essential to the construction and the plastic recycling industries. More than 30% of carbon dioxide is expected to be reduced by using green concrete. The utilization of solid waste in concrete has become an attractive alternative as the tensile strength, and fracture toughness of such kind of concrete can be improved.
a) Inter-molecular diffusion mechanism in cementitious materials
b)Interfacial strength of fiber-reinforced composites
Interface plays a vital role in determining heterogenous materials' overall mechanical properties. Comprehensive understanding is required of the complex processes that control interface formation, evolution, and failure. Scientific insights that guide the design of interface and associated interphases can improve the performance of heterogeneous materials.
Huali Hao is an associate professor at School of Civil Engineering, Wuhan University. Her interests include the interfacial behavior of heterogeneous materials, structure design of bio-inspired materials, and mechanics of green materials. She published more than 15 academic papers indexed by SCI as first author or corresponding author and held 3 Chinese patents and 1 US patent. She was awarded the Hong Kong Ph.D. Fellowship by the Research Grants Council (RGC) of Hong Kong in 2016 and was selected into Yellow Crane Talents Program in 2022. She has been invited to give oral presentations at international conferences, such as Engineering Mechanics Institute Conference, ChinaNano, and IFireSS.
